‘Morus Nigra Mulle’ is a black mulberry. The tree is very characteristic because of its branches and its dark green heart-shaped leaves. In May the black mulberry is in bloom with a white blossom. In autumn, red and black fruits appear on the branches. They are green at first, then turn red and are black and red when fully ripe. They resemble raspberries and taste slightly sweet and aromatic. The fruits are healthy, containing a lot of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants. You can eat them fresh, dry or process them as jam and juice. The mulberry tree grows slowly and usually only produces fruit after a number of years. The trees can become very old, 100 years or more. Depending on how you prune it, the mulberry tree can grow as big as you want, so it is also suitable for the somewhat smaller garden. Pruning is done by removing the small lower branches from the tree and removing large branches that would spoil the shape of the tree. Keep the crown open so that light can fall into it. You can also plant the mulberry in a pot on the terrace or balcony. In a flowerpot, however, the mulberry is more sensitive to frost. Therefore, it is useful to wrap the pot with bubble wrap in the winter. Mulberries grow best in the sun, in moisture-retaining soil.
