Stipa tenuissima ‘Pony Tails’, also called feather grass, is a fine ornamental grass, with upright growth to a maximum height of 80 cm. The leaf has a very fine, almost hair-like structure with a green colour that can change to light brown. The ‘Pony Tails’ prefers a sunny spot, but can also survive in the semi-shade. Pony Tails’ flowers start in May and can last until the beginning of autumn. In this period, white flower plumes appear in the plant, creating a playful colour effect. The wind will make the grass ‘wave’ like the hairs on a pony tail in the wind. For the best effect in the garden, it is advisable to plant the plant in groups, so that nice clumps form. We recommend pruning feather-grass back to 20 cm above the ground in spring. The fine leaves will then quickly sprout again, creating a beautiful wavy head of hair.
