‘Imperata Red Baron’ is also known as Japanese Blood Grass. As the name suggests, this type of ornamental grass comes from Japan. It owes its name to its red coloured blades, which make it look as if the plant is covered in blood. The sun turns the plant increasingly red. The beautiful red colour becomes brighter when the grass is a little sheltered, but in the full sun the green of the plant will dominate. It is suitable for the full soil and for terrace planting in a pot. It is wise to fertilize Imperata Red Baron biannually, in spring and summer. Do this with organic fertilizer. It is important to wet the plant well afterwards, so that the manure sinks to the roots. This ornamental grass is frost-resistant, but in the first year it is best to cover it to prevent frost damage. After the plant has rooted well, you no longer need to cover it. It is wise to cut this type of ornamental grass back to just above the ground in early spring. It grows fairly quickly and will show red spots again a few weeks after it starts growing. On average, it takes until the end of May for the ‘Imperata’ to reach full size and have the red colour. The height of the plant varies between 40 and 70 cm.
